Theoretical Review on Microplastic Pollution: A Multifaceted Threat to Marine Ecosystems, Human Health, and Environment
by Saisanthosh Vamshi Harsha Madiraju, Abhiram Siva Prasad Pamula and Bhanu Prakash Darsi

Microplastic pollution in oceans poses a complex global threat to marine ecosystems and human health. These ubiquitous plastic particles originate from diverse sources and become widely dispersed by ocean currents, contaminating remote regions worldwide. In the aquatic environment, microplastics cause physical harm to aquatic species through ingestion. They disrupt habitats and act as vectors for toxic chemicals through bioaccumulation in aquatic species, enter food webs, and impair marine ecosystem functions. For humans, microplastic exposure ...via seafood consumption, drinking water, and inhalation raises concerns about potential inflammatory, cytotoxic, and endocrine-disrupting diseases that are linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and metabolic disorders. Mitigating this pervasive pollution requires a multi-pronged approach, including policy interventions that minimize plastic use, improve waste management, encourage technological innovations for biodegradable alternatives, provide public awareness campaigns, and improve coordinated efforts across plastic stakeholders. Comprehensive strategies combining research, regulations, and public engagement are crucial to protect marine life and human health from the detrimental impacts of microplastic contamination. This paper provides an overview of the origins and pathways of microplastics and assesses the impacts of microplastic pollution on human health and the environment. This study also highlights the methodology, knowledge gaps, and future directions to facilitate research on microplastic removal and risk assessment in the oceans.

Potentially Toxic Metals in Cucumber Cucumis sativus Collected from Peninsular Malaysia: A Human Health Risk Assessment
by Chee Kong Yap, Rosimah Nulit, Aziran Yaacob, Zaieka Shamsudin, Meng Chuan Ong, Wan Mohd Syazwan, Hideo Okamura, Yoshifumi Horie, Chee Seng Leow, Ahmad Dwi Setyawan, Krishnan Kumar, Wan Hee Cheng and Kennedy Aaron Aguol

The purposes of this study were to assess the concentrations of Fe, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the cucumber Cucumis sativus from four farming areas of Peninsular Malaysia, to assess the HHRA of the five heavy metals in the collected samples. The cucumber was collected between May and December 2016 from Kg Ara Kuda (Penang), Kg. Sitiawan (Perak), Kuala Ketil (Kedah) and Jerantut (Pahang) of Peninsular Malaysia. For the edible fruity cucumber, the ranges of metal concentrations (mg/kg dry weight) from the four sites were 9.56-13.6 for Cu, 39.5-109 for... Fe, 0.18-2.19 for Ni, 0.74-2.78 for Pb and 17.5-62.0 for Zn. All the target hazard quotient values for Fe, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in adults and children were found below 1.00 for the health risk assessment. The present investigation found no evidence of non-carcinogenic hazards associated with the intake of cucumber in relation to Fe, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. However, it is important to regularly evaluate the levels of heavy metals in vegetables cultivated in these soils and adopt appropriate remediation procedures to reduce harmful effects on human health.

Enhancing Material Property Predictions through Optimized KNN Imputation and Deep Neural Network Modeling
by Murad Ali Khan

In materials science, the integrity and completeness of datasets are critical for robust predictive modeling. Unfortunately, material datasets frequently contain missing values due to factors such as measurement errors, data non-availability, or experimental limitations, which can significantly undermine the accuracy of property predictions. To tackle this challenge, we introduce an optimized K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) imputation method, augmented with Deep Neural Network (DNN) modeling, to enhance the accuracy of predicting material properties.... Our study compares the performance of our Enhanced KNN method against traditional imputation techniques—mean imputation and Multiple Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE). The results indicate that our Enhanced KNN method achieves a superior R² score of 0.973, which represents a significant improvement of 0.227 over Mean imputation, 0.141 over MICE, and 0.044 over KNN imputation. This enhancement not only boosts the data integrity but also preserves the statistical characteristics essential for reliable predictions in materials science.

Smart Mobility and Sensor Based-BRT Crusade, the Challenge for Auto Mechanics and Technicians in Africa
by Dukiya JJ

African countries with no globally recognized auto manufacturing factories are flooded with the most modern automobiles as soon as they are commercialized in the absence of commensurate skilled local auto mechanics across the continent. In the wake of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme in Abuja Nigeria, the first set of luxurious buses purchased ended up as junks within a short period of operation largely due to lack of technician competency. The continuous patronage of a few multinational workshop garages like Toyota, Honda, Kia Motors, etc is... hindering the transport agencies from breaking even. This paper is therefore aimed at evaluating the state of bus auto-mechanics and technicians in Nigeria for sustainable hybrid buses for effective BRT in the country. Google search engine was used to source secondary data from dedicated transport and energy-related sites like National Research Council (NRC) Agora Verkehrswende and GIZ, Smart city study, USDoT, and Africa Transport Solution, for the current paradigm shift in automobile energy management. Participatory surveys were carried out in two major motor mechanic villages that house over two hundred (200) workshops. The study reveals that there is a yawning gap between the societal ideal auto-mechanic expectations and the operational woe realities. This work becomes very relevant in view of global urbanization and the crusade for Hybrid Bus Rapid Transit (HBRT) in urban mobility as a panacea to COP28 carbon emission reduction. It is recommended that policymakers in urban transportation at all levels should ensure the certification and re-training of the motor mechanics to be able to maintain those imported modern buses while investing in ITS-based road infrastructure for sustainable BRT in their country

by Bekir Erhan Orhan, Aydin Karaçam and Yuni Astuti

This study examines the game skills of children aged 5-6 years participating in movement education programs. Given the crucial role of physical and cognitive skill development in early childhood, the study aims to explore how structured physical activities influence children’s motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social interactions. A descriptive survey model was employed involving 144 parents of children participating in movement education. The Game Skills Scale (GSS) was utilized to measure children’s game skills, and data were... analyzed using SPSS 25, with t-tests for pairwise comparisons and Pearson’s correlation coefficient applied to determine relationships between variables, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The results indicate that the game skills of children participating in movement education are notably high, with no significant differences based on gender or age. Furthermore, the duration of participation in movement education did not significantly impact the children’s game skills. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating structured physical activity programs in early childhood education to promote comprehensive development. The study contributes to the existing literature by highlighting the multifaceted benefits of movement education and providing insights for optimizing early childhood physical activity interventions.

Unlawful Homicide of Two Ugly and Disabled Victims in a Japanese Tale Based on a True Story
by Sung Gyun Jung, Kun Hwang and Young Joong Hwang

It is extremely rare for an ugly wife to be killed by her husband because of her ugliness. The aim of this study is to draw inferences regarding the treatment of children and women who were disfigured or disabled during the Japanese Edo period.“Shiryo-Gedatsu Monogatari-Kikigaki”, reportage literature based on a true story was analyzed.Yoemon remarried Osugi, and her son Suke was born with an ugly face and unnatural legs. Yoemon hated Suke and urged Osugi to abandon Suke, and in the end, Osugi threw Suke into the river and killed hi...m. Yoemon and Osugi later had a daughter and named her Rui. Rui had a very similar appearance to Suke. Thus, the village people called her Kasane, saying that Suke was reborn. Kasane married Yagoro, who became the second Yoemon. Yoemon disliked Kasane for her ugly appearance, so he killed her by pushing her into the river and continued to take subsequent wives, but each of them died after marriage. After the sixth marriage, his only child, Kiku, was tormented by Kasane’s spirit. About the appearance of Kasane, Kiku said: “The woman named Kasane had black skin, one eye was rotten, her nose was crushed, her mouth was wide, her face was marred with boils, her hands were bent, and one leg was short. She had the appearance of a scary old woman, like I had never seen before.”Through this story, we learn that there has been widespread hatred for children or women with an ugly appearance.

EB Naevi-like Lesion in Infant Bullous Pemphigoid
by Laura Serpa, Haizza Monteiro, Maria de Oliveira Buffara, Raíssa Rodriguez, Ana Luisa Alves, Viviane Maria Maiolini and Elisa Fontenelle*

Epidermolysis Bullosa Naevi (EBN) is a subset of melanocytic nevi with atypical features arising at sites of blistering in patients with congenital EB. It may be clinically misdiagnosed as melanoma and may represent a challenge for the dermatologist. Bullous Pemphigoid (BP) consists of an autoimmune condition presenting with subepidermal blisters, usually affecting the elderly and rarely observed in children The case is reported of an infant who presented with pruritic erythematous bullous lesions, initially appearing over the trunk and legs wi...th progression to arms and face. Clinical and immunopathological features were consistent with the diagnosis of infant BP. In the course of the disease, he developed a pigmented heterogeneous macule with irregular contour and satellite-dotted lesions, located on the right flank. Dermoscopy revealed a regular pigmented network distributed in an agminated manner interspersed with areas of healthy skin. Due to its similarity to EBN, an expectant approach was carried out. The lesion regressed during the 24-month follow-up. To our knowledge, there is only one literature case report of a child who presented with EBN-like in a previous BP lesion. Our case reinforces the presence of atypical melanocytic nevi in bullous diseases. Knowing this type of lesion clinically and dermatoscopically in patients with bullous dermatoses may prevent unnecessary surgical procedures in children.
