About University

Founded in 1889 by Prime Minister Bir Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, Bir Hospital has been a cornerstone of Nepal's healthcare system for over a century. Initially established with 30 beds, the hospital has expanded significantly to accommodate 460 beds, serving as a central hub for medical care in the nation.

As the first teaching hospital in Nepal, Bir Hospital pioneered medical education by initiating training programs for compounders, dressers, and nurses. In 1933, it established the Civil Medical School, laying the foundation for formal medical education in the country. The hospital's commitment to academic excellence continued with the introduction of postgraduate training programs in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1987, marking a significant milestone in surgical education in Nepal.

In 2002, the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was established, with Bir Hospital as its primary teaching affiliate. This partnership has enhanced the hospital's role in providing advanced medical education, offering MD, MS, and MDS programs, as well as super-specialty fellowships in various disciplines. NAMS also oversees nursing education programs, contributing to the development of skilled healthcare professionals in Nepal.

Bir Hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including general medicine, surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiology, and more. The hospital is equipped with modern medical technologies, such as MRI services, and has specialized units like the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, which provides critical care to patients with severe burn injuries.

Despite its rich history and pivotal role in Nepal's healthcare system, Bir Hospital faces challenges, including financial constraints and the need for infrastructure development. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues, with initiatives aimed at improving facilities, expanding services, and maintaining the hospital's commitment to providing quality healthcare to all segments of the population.

In summary, Bir Hospital stands as a testament to Nepal's medical heritage, continually evolving to meet the healthcare needs of the nation while upholding its legacy of medical excellence and education

A Rare Entity of Idiopathic Clitoromegaly with HBsAg Positive Status Managed with Dorsal Nerve Sparing Clitoroplasty
by Maharjan N, Pokharel PB, Lamichhane A and Dahal P

Clitoromegaly, defined as an enlarged clitoris with a clitoral index of more than 35 mm2 is a frequently seen congenital malformation but an idiopathic entity is a rare one. The most acceptable method of treatment of clitoromegaly is clitoroplasty with preservation of neurovascular pedicle to glans to achieve normal genital anatomy and to preserve tactile sensation. We present a rare case of idiopathic clitoromegaly managed by dorsal nerve sparing reduction clitoroplasty in an HBsAg-positive patient.
