Hematology is the branch of medicine dedicated to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of blood-related disorders. This field encompasses a wide range of conditions, including anemia, clotting disorders, leukemias, lymphomas, and hemophilia. Hematologists work to understand the intricate dynamics of blood cells, bone marrow, and the coagulation system, providing life-saving care through innovative therapies and transfusion medicine.
As a rapidly advancing discipline, hematology has been transformed by breakthroughs in molecular biology, immunotherapy, and gene editing technologies. From improving outcomes in blood cancers to managing chronic hematologic diseases, hematology plays a pivotal role in modern medicine. Its integration with oncology, immunology, and genetics highlights its importance in addressing complex health challenges.
Open Access Policy refers to a set of principles and guidelines aimed at providing unrestricted access to scholarly research and literature. It promotes the free availability and unrestricted use of research outputs, enabling researchers, students, and the general public to access, read, download, and distribute scholarly articles without financial or legal barriers. In this response, I will provide you with an overview of the history and latest resolutions related to Open Access Policy.
With the development of safe blood supply and transfusion comes the introduction of quality as a culture, implemented through the introduction of a Quality System (QS) and Quality Management System (QMS). Often the idea is that– ‘when instructions are written (SOPs) a quality system is in place. Just follow the instructions, that is it.’ However, quality only partly depends on following instructions at the operational level. Generally not understood is the importance of designing and implementing a quality management system, b...ased on 5 key elements 1) organization and structure; 2) standards (technical and quality); 3) documentation - traceability and evidence; 4) education - continued teaching and training; 5) assessment - continued monitoring and evaluation.Development and implementation of an appropriate quality system and management were evaluated for 15 developing countries (2004-2020) in 4 WHO regions. Projects were based on a step-by-step introduction to the concept and principles of quality following a Quality Management Training (QMT) course – modular, interactive, with improvement score evaluation focused on comprehension and ownership of the teaching and training contents. For an optimal understanding of the values of quality in Transfusion Medicine (TM), a culture has to be created - ownership development, commitment to and implementation of the principles of fitness for purpose, and the supplier-producer-customer continuum.

Mastocytosis, a hematological neoplasm, manifests with diverse clinical, molecular, and histomorphological features. This review explores the different subtypes of mastocytosis, focusing on the role of molecular pathology and histomorphology in diagnosing systemic mastocytosis (SM). Systemic mastocytosis is characterized by histologically confirmed extracutaneous involvement, presenting a diagnostic challenge due to its rarity and diverse subtypes, ranging from occult SM to mast cell leukemia. The complexity of accurate SM diagnosis underscores... the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of the disease spectrum. Mastocytosis emerges as a rare, multifaceted disease, predominantly affecting children in the cutaneous form and adults in the systemic variant. The review advocates a multidisciplinary diagnostic approach involving experienced hematopathologists and haematooncologists, employing conventional histomorphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular techniques. This holistic approach is crucial for accurate diagnosis, especially in light of recent therapeutic advances, particularly the growing importance of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in the management of mastocytosis.
